Cass Gilbert’s State Capitol

On a quiet winter Saturday, I explored Cass Gilbert’s Minnesota State Capitol to document its masterful Beaux-Arts architecture. The building’s barrel-vaulted corridors and grand staircase exemplify a deliberate journey through democratic grandeur, utilizing natural light to highlight Gilbert's classical vision.

The historic restoration of the rotunda and its zodiac murals showcases a profound commitment to material authenticity. Despite the sensitivity of the Georgia marble, the meticulous preservation of the Corinthian capitals and geometric floor patterns maintains the building’s original 1905 palette.

Capturing these layered marble surfaces is more than a study of architectural achievement; it is a documentation of civic values. Through this lens, the Capitol stands as a tangible expression of democratic ideals, preserved through expert architectural restoration and timeless design.
